Mandated Assistance Program

When a student is referred for a substance use assessment, the counselor will meet briefly with the parent(s) and student together, then continue the assessment with the student alone. The goal: to better understand how substance use may be impacting various life areas by exploring topics such as school pressures, friends, family relationships, and recreation activities. When necessary or appropriate, this assessment process may also include a standardized substance use screening tool and/or drug testing.

Following the assessment, an individualized treatment plan will be recommended. This plan will be discussed with the counselor, parent(s), and student together to ensure understanding and agreement. When necessary (such as when assessment is mandated by a school), the counselor will regularly monitor treatment plan compliance. The counselor will continue to be available to the family to provide education and support.

The Mandated Assistance Program is not a punitive response, it is a supportive process. If you suspect that a student may be using, consult with a school counselor or the Aleinu Addiction Specialist
