Diabetes: Women's Issues
Diabetes and Women's Issues
Diabulimia
Young women who manipulate insulin to lose weight
Main points to remember about women, eating disorders and diabetes:
Many young women feel that being thin is an absolute must.
Some purposely avoid taking insulin so that their sugars will be high causing rapid and unhealthy weight loss.
Neglecting to take insulin and living with constant high blood sugars increases the chance of falling into a diabetic coma.
Be aware that some will fake their blood sugar readings so that others won't become suspicious of their actions.
A good sign that someone is avoiding insulin shots is worsening blood sugar results despite efforts to help reduce them.
It is important that the diabetes team work closely with mental health professionals.
Effects of Diabetes on Women
Sexual Difficulties in Women with Diabetes
Diabetic women's sexuality issues:
Most women don't like to talk about their sexuality issues.
Women with diabetes have more problems with sexuality than non-diabetic women.
Diabetic women may be more prone to getting urinary tract infections and yeast infections which affects their ability to be intimate.
It may be harder for diabetic women to get their bodies to respond as needed when in the mood.
Up to 34% of women with diabetes have trouble lubricating; using a lubricant can help.
It is important to keep blood sugars under control. This is especially true for women who want to become pregnant.
Sometimes, certain medication can impact your sexuality. If you suspect that this is a possibility, speak to your doctor.
Treatment options: There are several options available to address these concerns, speak to your doctor about the best treatment option for you.
