Nutrition and Recipes for Diabetics

Nutrition tips for diabetics

The following nutritional tips for diabetics were gathered during a talk Susan Dopart, M.S. RD gave to our group on August 17th 2009.
  • Diabetics should incorporate protein in their diet and add fruits and vegetables as well as healthy fats to their diet
  • Stay away from starchy carbohydrates if possible since they increase insulin resistance (ex: limit pasta, bagels)
  • Since diabetes is an inflammation-type of illness, it's important to avoid oils that will increase inflammation in the body (such as vegetable oils, canola oil, soybean oil, corn oil). These oils have Omega 6 fatty acids which increase inflammation.
  • Use Omega 3 oils such as Olive oil which reduce inflammation.
  • If you must cook at high temperatures (such as frying), use Coconut oil which is a healthy form of saturated fat.
  • Sleep is very important ... so make sure you get enough of it!
  • A little exercise every day can significantly reduce your insulin resistance.
  • Take Omega 3 fish oil (either in capsule or just straight oil) if at all possible. It has many health benefits.
