Medical Insurance Coverage for Diabetics

The following tips on getting insurance coverage for diabetics was presented by Howard Fried from the Howard I. Fried Agency on October 26th 2009.

Diabetics can get insurance coverage in the following ways:
  • Through their employer's group insurance
  • Through the California High Risk Health Insurance (MRMIP) http://mrmib.ca.gov/mrmib/MRMIPBRO.pdf
  • Through Medicare if over age 65 or in some cases, you may qualify before age 65 if you are on disability
  • Or they may also create a group as small as two individuals (including two family members so long as they are on payroll)

COBRA

In California, one can use COBRA insurance for up to 36 months. COBRA is usually expensive, but it allows you to keep the same insurance you had with your employer prior to being laid off.

As of now, the U.S. government has a program that will pay for 65% of the COBRA insurance premiums. You can get more information about it here: http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/cobra.html

Life Insurance
It is possible for diabetics to get life insurance. Contact your agent if you have further questions.
