Teen Safety on Simchat TorahSimchat Torah is a time of great joy and celebration. Unfortunately, too many of our teens have been endangered by using alcohol during Simchat Torah festivities.
In recent years, teens in our community were rushed to local emergency rooms due to alcohol poisoning, and at least one teen nearly died.
Binge drinking (consuming too much alcohol too quickly) can cause vomiting, seizures, irregular breathing and heart rate, hypothermia, unconsciousness, and even death.
BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY – TALK TO YOUR TEENS ABOUT SIMCHAT TORAH
Set aside a time to discuss Simchat Torah
- Express your concerns about the dangers of binge drinking
- Agree upon a plan for Simchat Torah:
- Discuss where your teen will be on Simchat Torah
- Agree upon a time for your teen to be home on Simchat Torah night
- Develop an emergency plan that identifies safe adults, homes, or peers, and acceptable alternatives for getting home if necessary
- Help your teen explore any concerns he or she may have about drinking
- Speak to your shul rabbi about your concerns regarding teen drinking
- Think about the example that your drinking behavior on Simchat Torah sets for your teen
