A More Sober Marking Of Purim?

Purim is a boisterous holiday celebrating the survival of the Jews of ancient Persia during an attempted plot on their lives. The festival includes storytelling, costumes, and an indulgence of drinking that has been a historical custom amongst the Jewish congregation. Especially in Orthodox circles, where the literal interpretation of Jewish law may require drinking as an expression of joy.

But the emergence of incidents where underage teens have needed medical attention for alcoholic abuse during the festivities has alerted leaders of the community to address the issue with urgency. It is cautiously advised for the celebrators to keep careful watch over how much alcohol is being consumed and by whom; so that the Jewish youth tempted to take part will be under monitored circumstances. Even in times of special celebration, there is a greater responsibility to the children.
