Addiction

“It started on Friday nights. Our parents would go to bed and my friends and I would go from house to house drinking from the liquor cabinets. Our parents didn’t notice that the alcohol was gone – they never would have believed we would do that. Friday night we drank and Saturday night we went to parties where we smoked up and drank some more. Soon after, our drinking turned to pill popping …xanax, oxycontin, effexor … medications we found in our parents cabinets. I was never a good student, and now I simply didn’t care. If I wasn’t sleeping in class, I ditched to go to the beach.

My school referred me to Aleinu. At first, I was really angry. The therapist really cared, and encouraged me not to give up. He guided my parents as well. I tried everything to get out of it … but he made sure that I received the intensive help I needed. He also worked closely with the school to ensure that I would not get kicked out. His persistence and my hard work paid off. I am now clean. I’m attending a school in Israel this year and it’s an amazing feeling to know I can succeed. The best part was realizing that someone believed in me enough to make sure I got help."

“Working with these kids is an inspiration. They want love, but are aching for a firm, guiding hand as well. I’ve learned and gained so much from them!”
