Social Skills
How do I know if my child needs to improve his or her social skills?
• Does your child complain that he/ she often feels left out when her peers are involved in games?
• Is he/she the last one picked when choosing teams for activities or games?
• Does he/she solicit negative attention from peers by teasing or bullying them?
• Does he/she remark that he/she is often picked on by their friends?
• Is he/she constantly trying to make friends without success?
• Is he/she excessively shy?
• Do you find your child is not invited to friends’ homes and parties?
What you can do if you feel your child needs help with social skills:
• Sign your child up for social skills groups!!!
• Go to your local library and pick out books about making friends and being a friend
• Role play starting up conversations with others and other social skills
• Ask your child why they feel its difficult to make friends
• Observe your child at play and gently give them suggestions
• Give positive reinforcement when your child exhibits a social skill that was learned
• Talk to their teacher about ways you can be of help as well as things the teacher could do to enhance the classroom experience.
• If your child is being bullied and cannot stand up for him/ herself have her see a therapist with experience in bullying prevention and intervention
