Signs that a child may be using alcohol or drugs
Physical Signs & Symptoms of Substance Use 
• slurred speech
• bloodshot eyes
• dilated or pinpoint pupils
• mood swings or changes
• irritability
• poor hygiene
• marked appetite change
• significant weight change
• marked change in sleep patterns
Behavioral Signs & Symptoms of Substance Use
• Changes in friends
• Negative changes in schoolwork, missing school, or declining grades
• Increased secrecy about possessions or activities
• Use of incense, room deodorant, or perfume (to hide smoke or chemical odors)
• Subtle changes in conversations with friends, (being more secretive, using “coded” language)
• Missing money/having unexplained amounts of money
• Drug paraphernalia (pipes, rolling papers, etc.)
• Use of eye drops or mouthwash
• Missing prescription drugs—especially painkillers, ADHD medication, or mood stabilizers
If you think your teen may be using…
• Do an inventory in your home –Alcohol/pills/drugs/money should not be accessible
• Don’t wait for the problem to get worse
• Clearly express your concern to your teen
• Be the parent – maintain the balance between expressing your love and support while ensuring that intervention occurs
• You don’t have to “fix” the situation alone – confidential resources are available in the community
