Memorable Moments - Seniors Gather to Improve their Memory and Make New Friends
Senior Services has begun on a high note in June by inviting seniors to a Memory Course given by the UCLA Center on Aging at the JFS Pico Robertson location. Those who attended the five week series learned techniques to help them remember important details that they need to for every day life. Those who attended enjoyed participating in the interactive exercises used to expand their memory capabilities. They were also grateful to have a place to come for coffee and socialization as they met up with old acquaintances and made new friends.
One participant in particular benefited tremendously from attending this memory course. This was a woman who had recently moved to the Los Angeles area and she had been feeling insecure and even fearful in her new environment. Acclimating to new surroundings at her stage in life proved difficult. She was unsure about how to meet her daily needs, such as where to shop and how to access transportation. With a passion for art, she was also desperately seeking a place where she could join an art class, as she felt that this would give her the boost she needed. Through attending the memory class, this woman was able to connect with a social worker who provided her assistance in accessing several resources that helped her to develop whole new comfort level in her environment. To top it off, she found several exciting options in her area to join that art class she desired!
Alumni from the Memory Course have since joined our current Health Education Series presented by Behavioral Health Services. This four class series aims to:
• Assist seniors to better understand the nature medications they’re taking
• Increase awareness of possible side effects to medications
• Empower seniors to communicate more effectively with their medical providers.
• Provide a forum for interesting questions
• Provide tips and techniques for protecting one’s health.
Health Education Series dates: 10:30 am – 12:00 pm on July 7, 14, 21, and 28
